Solar on Brownfields

Brownfields into Brightfields? Yes, that is the phrase used to describe the result of placing a clean, renewable energy resource on a once contaminated and unusable industrial or commercial site (brownfield). Implementing a solar energy system in the redevelopment of a brownfield makes environmental and economical sense.

Here’s why: Many states now require that a percentage of energy sold must come from renewable and alternative energy resources. To accomplish this, energy producers are seeking areas to place wind, hydropower, solar and other energy producing systems. Brownfields, often in urban areas where solar land costs traditionally prevent solar installations, are the ideal open and available locations to develop these new energy sources. Also, many brownfield developers are eager to adopt creative solutions that can generate revenue on formerly contaminated sites. Notably, solar is becoming the popular option for renewable energy on brownfields because select solar systems have very little impact to the surface area.

SunPods Solar Operational Integrated Landfill System (SOILS™) takes ease of solar installation on brownfields to a new level of efficiency. The SOILS systems are factory-built, pre-assembled, ready to set in place and power-up on delivery. Each SOILS unit is self-ballasted and can withstand winds up to 90mph. Therefore, the SunPods-designed solar systems require no ground penetrations, no on-site assembly and are very low maintenance. The SOILS’ power adjustable legs contribute to the ideal design. Each individual leg can be adjusted on uneven soil with limited or no disturbance to the soil surface.

Site owners and managers have the flexibility to implement solar power systems ranging from small commercial size arrays, ideal for smaller urban brownfields, to large utility scale power farms on abandoned factory sites, strip mines and other large contaminated sites.
